IIM Bangalore UG Admissions: BSc (Hons.) in Data Science & Economics
Everything a Class 12 student needs on IIM Bangalore's undergraduate programme — eligibility, the UGAT exam pattern & syllabus, fees, curriculum, campus, and career prospects — in one place.
For decades, an IIM was somewhere you went after a bachelor's degree and a few years of work experience. That changed in 2025, when IIM Bangalore — India's No. 2-ranked business school — opened its doors to Class 12 students for the first time, with a four-year residential B.Sc. (Hons.) programme in Data Science and Economics. It's a genuinely new category of undergraduate course: IIM-grade faculty and pedagogy, delivered straight out of school, with a small, hand-picked batch of just 80 students. This guide walks through the programme end to end — what it teaches, who it's for, how to get in, what it costs, and where it can take you.

About the Programme: Two Degrees, One Interdisciplinary Core
IIM Bangalore's School of Multidisciplinary Studies runs the show here, and it offers two distinct honours degrees under one admissions process. Both begin with a shared foundation year before students branch into a major, so the choice between the two isn't final on day one of applying.
B.Sc. (Hons.) in Economics
with a minor in Data Science & Business Studies
Built around microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, public policy, and quantitative methods, layered with statistical inference and data mining. Suited to students who want to understand why markets, institutions, and policy behave the way they do — and go on to shape them.
B.Sc. (Hons.) in Data Science
with a minor in Economics & Business Studies
Covers statistics, probability, algorithms, programming (Python/R), machine learning, and AI, paired with applied business and economics learning. Suited to students who want to extract patterns and build systems from large-scale data.
Both are four-year, full-time, in-person residential programmes under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) framework, which also means a built-in exit option after three years with a basic bachelor's degree, if a student chooses not to continue to the honours year. The curriculum is delivered by IIM Bangalore's own faculty along with visiting academicians and industry practitioners — so while the degree says "B.Sc.," the classroom experience is unmistakably IIM.
Campus: The New Jigani Campus
Unlike IIM Bangalore's flagship postgraduate programmes, which run out of the iconic Bannerghatta Road campus, the UG programme is housed at a purpose-built 110-acre campus in Jigani, roughly 27–30 km from the main campus, near Bannerghatta National Park on Bengaluru's southern edge. It's a fully residential setup — hostel accommodation is part of the programme, not an optional add-on — designed to give this small, close-knit batch an immersive, campus-first four years with easy access to IIMB's broader academic ecosystem in the city.
IIM Bangalore UG Eligibility Criteria
Before you plan your prep, make sure you actually qualify. The eligibility bar has three parts — age, academics, and the entrance test.
Age Limit
Applicants must be 20 years or younger as of August 1 of the admission year for the general category (relaxation applicable for reserved categories as per Government of India norms).
Academic Qualification
Must have completed (or be appearing for) Class XII or an equivalent examination from a recognised board, with Mathematics as a subject, along with a minimum aggregate as prescribed in the official notification for Class X Mathematics.
Entrance Test
Must register for and appear in the IIM Bangalore Undergraduate Admissions Test (UGAT), followed by a Personal Interview if shortlisted.
IIM Bangalore UGAT: Exam Pattern
The IIMB Undergraduate Admissions Test (UGAT) is a computer-based test (CBT) held once a year, typically in December. It's the first — and most decisive — filter in the admissions process.
| Parameter | Detail |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-Based Test (CBT) |
| Duration | 120 minutes (no sectional time limits — you can move freely between sections) |
| Total Questions | 60 MCQs |
| Sections | English Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation |
| Marking Scheme | Positive marks for every correct answer; negative marking for every incorrect answer (as per the inaugural exam's scheme) |
| Sectional Cutoffs | None at the shortlisting stage — only the overall score is considered |
English Comprehension
Reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, and verbal reasoning.
Logical Reasoning
Puzzles, arrangements, analytical reasoning, and pattern-based logic.
Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation
The single largest section, worth about half the paper. Covers Class XI–XII level Maths plus data interpretation sets — meaning this is one entrance test where you genuinely can't skip your school Maths NCERTs.
Since QA & DI alone accounts for roughly half of the total marks, it tends to be the single biggest swing factor in a candidate's overall score — strong verbal or reasoning scores rarely compensate for a weak quant section.
IIMB UGAT Syllabus: Topic-Wise Breakdown
There's no single official syllabus PDF — IIM Bangalore instead bases the paper on the NCERT curriculum for Classes X–XII, general reasoning ability, and standard English-language skills. Based on the pattern of the paper so far, here's what to prepare:
Quantitative Ability & DI
Logical Reasoning
English Comprehension
Selection Process: How the Final Merit List Is Built
Clearing the UGAT only gets you shortlisted — it doesn't get you in. Admission is a two-stage process, and both stages carry real weight:
Weightage is based on the inaugural admission cycle and may be revised by IIM Bangalore in subsequent years.
- Application: Submit the online form with academic details, documents, and the application fee.
- UGAT: Appear for the 120-minute computer-based entrance test.
- Shortlisting: Candidates are ranked by overall UGAT score; a defined multiple of the available seats is called for interviews.
- Personal Interview (PI): Assesses communication, general awareness, clarity of thought, and motivation for the programme.
- Final Merit List: A weighted combination of UGAT score and PI performance determines the offer list, followed by a waitlist.
Curriculum: How the Four Years Are Structured
The programme runs on 160 credits across 8 semesters, following a "broad-then-deep" NEP-style structure: every student studies a common interdisciplinary foundation before specialising.
Year 1 — Common Foundation
All students, regardless of eventual major, study a shared foundation spanning Economics, Data Science, Business Studies, mathematics, and communication skills. This year is designed to give everyone genuine exposure to all three disciplines before they commit to a major.
Year 2 — Major Selection Begins
Students choose their major — Economics or Data Science — and begin core coursework in that discipline, while continuing structured exposure to the other two areas as minors.
Year 3 — Specialisation Deepens
Coursework goes deeper into the chosen major (econometrics and public policy for Economics; machine learning, AI, and applied analytics for Data Science), alongside electives, internships, and research exposure. Students who wish to exit with a basic bachelor's degree (as per UGC norms) may do so at the end of this year.
Year 4 — Honours & Capstone
The final year centres on advanced electives, a faculty-guided independent capstone project, and continued professional and research skill-building, culminating in the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree.
Assessment follows a continuous evaluation model — quizzes, assignments, projects, presentations, and end-of-term exams — rather than one high-stakes annual exam. Students also get structured exposure to internships and global exchange opportunities as part of the programme design.
IIM Bangalore UG Fee Structure
As with any newly launched programme, the fee structure is set year-on-year by the institute, so treat the figures below as an informed estimate rather than a locked-in number — always confirm the exact figure in your admission offer letter.
| Component | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| Annual fee (Years 1 & 2) | ~₹8.5 lakh per year (tuition + residential) |
| Total programme cost (4 years) | Estimated ₹34–38 lakh, subject to a minor annual revision |
| Mess charges | Estimated ₹8,000–₹10,000 per month, billed separately |
| Application fee | Payable at the time of registering for the UGAT (as per the official notification) |
Scholarships & Financial Aid
IIM Bangalore has a long-standing institutional commitment that no admitted student should be turned away purely for financial reasons, and this extends to the UG programme:
- Need-based financial aid: assessed on household income, assets, and dependents, covering a percentage of tuition and residential fees for eligible students.
- Merit-based recognition: support for outstanding academic performers, expected to expand as the programme matures.
- External scholarships: national schemes (such as NSP), state government scholarships, and category-specific government schemes remain applicable where relevant.
- Education loans: facilitated through IIMB's partner banks at preferential terms for admitted students.
Since this is a new programme, the scholarship framework is expected to be formalised and expanded in the coming admission cycles — check the official portal for the current year's specific schemes.
Why Choose the IIM Bangalore UG Programme?
An IIM Straight Out of School
Rare access to IIM Bangalore's faculty, pedagogy, and brand at the undergraduate level — normally available only after a prior degree and work experience.
Small, Intensive Cohort
Just 80 students a batch means genuine faculty access, close peer networks, and personalised attention that's hard to find in larger UG programmes.
Interdisciplinary by Design
Every student gets real exposure to Economics, Data Science, and Business Studies — not a single-track degree — before specialising.
Research & Capstone Focus
Early exposure to faculty-led research, culminating in an independent capstone project in the final year.
Flexible Exit Option
NEP-aligned structure allows an exit after three years with a basic degree, if circumstances change.
Global & Industry Exposure
Structured opportunities for internships, industry interaction, and international exchange built into the four-year design.
Who Should Appear for the IIM Bangalore UGAT?
This programme isn't for every Class 12 student — it rewards a specific kind of readiness:
- Students who are strong in Mathematics and enjoyed Class 11–12 quant, not just scored well in it.
- Students who want to commit early to a quant-and-data-driven career — economics research, policy, analytics, AI/ML, consulting, or finance — rather than keep options maximally open.
- Students comfortable with a fully residential four-year commitment away from home, at a brand-new campus.
- Students who want an alternative to engineering or a standard B.Com/BA/BSc route, with a management-institute pedigree attached from year one.
- Students targeting eventual postgraduate study (MBA, MSc, PhD) or roles in data-driven fields, for whom an early, rigorous quantitative foundation is a genuine advantage.
Career Prospects & Future Scope
Because the programme is brand new, there's no placement track record yet to point to — but the curriculum design maps clearly onto two distinct career tracks:
Policy, Research & Finance
Roles in economic research, public policy, financial and business consulting, and market research — or progression to a Master's/MBA/PhD in Economics, Public Policy, or Management at top Indian and global institutions.
Analytics, AI & Tech
Roles in data analytics, machine learning, business intelligence, and quantitative consulting across tech, finance, and consulting firms — or specialised Master's programmes in Data Science, AI, or Management.
In both tracks, the underlying pitch is the same: a rigorous quantitative foundation plus an IIM Bangalore degree, four years earlier than the traditional post-graduate-management route.
Important Dates: The Typical Admission Cycle
Since IIM Bangalore releases exact dates fresh each year, here's the tentative annual cycle based on how the programme has run so far — use this to plan your preparation timeline, and always confirm exact dates on the official portal closer to the season.
Prepare for the IIM Bangalore UGAT the Right Way
Since QA & DI alone can decide your score, generic aptitude prep isn't enough. Our UGAT programme is built specifically around the Class XI–XII Maths-heavy pattern of this exam, with full-length mocks, sectional drills, and personal-interview coaching.
Class XI–XII Maths Focus
Targeted revision of the exact quant topics the UGAT actually tests — not repurposed CAT or IPMAT material.
Full-Length Timed Mocks
Simulated 120-minute UGAT-pattern tests with detailed, section-wise performance analysis.
Personal Interview Coaching
Mock PI sessions covering general awareness, motivation, and communication — the 40% that decides your final rank.
Mentor-Led Score Tracking
Ongoing analysis of your mock performance so your prep evolves with your weak areas, not against them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the IIM Bangalore UG programme the same as IPM?
No. The Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) is offered by IIMs like Indore and Rohtak as a five-year integrated BBA+MBA. IIM Bangalore's offering is a distinct four-year B.Sc. (Hons.) in Economics or Data Science, run through its own dedicated UGAT entrance test.
Can I choose my major (Economics or Data Science) while applying?
You apply to the UG programme broadly; the first year is a shared foundation across disciplines, and formal major selection happens from Year 2 onward, once students have had exposure to both areas.
Is this programme only for Commerce or Science stream students?
No — the core requirement is Mathematics as a Class XII subject and a strong quantitative aptitude, not a specific stream. Students from Science, Commerce, or Humanities (with Maths) can all apply, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
How difficult is the IIM Bangalore UGAT compared to other UG entrance exams?
Early test-takers have generally described it as moderate — the English and Logical Reasoning sections are comparable to exams like BITSAT, while the Quant section leans on Class XI–XII Maths rather than the more puzzle-heavy style of some other aptitude tests. The Personal Interview carries substantial weight, so strong exam performance alone doesn't guarantee an offer.
Is hostel accommodation compulsory?
Yes — this is a fully residential programme, and hostel stay at the Jigani campus is built into the programme design and fee structure.
What happens if I want to leave after three years instead of four?
The programme follows NEP 2020's multiple-exit structure, which allows students to exit after three years with a basic bachelor's degree (as per UGC norms) rather than the full Honours degree.
