Degree and Programme Overview

Under the IIM Act, students admitted to the IPM are eligible for a dual degree: Bachelor of Arts (Foundations of Management) and Master of Business Administration (MBA), awarded on completing the programme. Some third-party sites call the first-phase degree a "BBA", but the institute's own admission document uses the Bachelor of Arts (Foundations of Management) name.

For the last two years, IPM students join the flagship two-year MBA (PGP) cohort. They share classrooms, summer internships and the final placement process with students who came in through CAT. The difference is age: IPM graduates typically finish their MBA at around 22, several years earlier than the degree-then-CAT route. As the first IPM in India, Indore has also had the longest time to build recruiter familiarity and alumni depth, something the newer IPMs are still working on.

Marks are calculated on the aggregate of all subjects shown in the mark sheet, regardless of the board's own rules. Candidates who will complete Class 12 by 31 July are admitted provisionally and must produce mark sheets at registration, or the offer is cancelled. IIM Indore reserves the right to decide equivalence and percentage criteria, so the admission procedure for your cycle is the reference document.

How to Apply: Step by Step

Application fee: about ₹4,100, and half that for SC/ST/PwD candidates. It is non-refundable. Documents to keep ready: Class 10 and 12 mark sheets (or provisional ones if appearing), photo ID, passport-size photo and signature, category, EWS or PwD certificate where applicable, and an email and mobile number you check daily. The institute does not send individual letters to candidates who are not shortlisted or selected, so monitor the portal.

IPMAT Indore is a computer-based test with three sections, each timed separately. You cannot carry unused time from one section into another.

Section-wise approach: The Short Answer section has no negative marking, so attempt every question with a reasoned guess. QA-MCQ and VA both carry a −1 penalty, so accuracy beats volume there. Verbal Ability is the largest section (45 of 90 questions) and carries half the weight in the Aptitude Test Score, so daily reading and timed reading-comprehension practice pay off more than vocabulary lists.

Two things follow from this design. Verbal Ability drives half of your ATS, and a weak section anywhere can end your candidacy before the interview. And the interview is both an opportunity and a filter: a strong one can lift a borderline aptitude score, while falling below the minimum on any parameter removes you from the merit list regardless of your test score.

Personal Interview: What to Prepare

The interview carries 35% of the composite score. Panels typically look for clear thinking, self-awareness and the ability to reason aloud at 17 or 18 years old, and they respond better to specific, honest answers than to rehearsed scripts.

Mock interviews with a panel-style setup, done repeatedly between the exam and the interview call, help more than last-minute revision of current affairs.

IPMAT Indore Cutoff

IIM Indore sets minimum cutoffs for each of the three sections by category, and only candidates who clear all of them and have a positive raw score enter the eligible pool. From that pool, a category-wise ATS merit list decides who is called for interview. Clearing the cutoffs earns an interview call, not a seat.

Cutoffs move with paper difficulty. A harder Quantitative section lowers raw-score cutoffs, so raw marks from different years are not directly comparable, and percentile-based estimates are more reliable. Only a small share of registered candidates reaches the interview stage, and published shortlist sizes vary between sources, so the safest plan is to aim for balanced strength across all three sections rather than a single high-scoring one.

The sanctioned domestic intake is 150 seats, with reservation as per Government of India norms. International applicants follow a separate procedure and intake.

General-category candidates face the largest applicant pool for the fewest seats, so General cutoffs are typically the highest. Plan your target score against your own category's trend.

The first three years are billed term-wise at a flat IPM-phase rate that includes tuition and on-campus stay. The last two years follow the institute's PGP (MBA) fee, which is higher per year.

It is a useful sense of scale, not a forecast.

IIM Indore offers need-based financial assistance to eligible students, and government scholarship schemes apply to SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD categories. Education loans from public-sector and private banks, including premier-institute loan schemes, are the usual financing route. Income limits and waiver levels are set by the institute each year.

IIM Indore runs one placement process for the PGP and IPM cohorts, so the combined report is the direct benchmark for IPM outcomes. The latest final-placement batch had 586 students, including 94 IPM dual-degree students.

Recruiters across recent seasons have included Deloitte, EY, Accenture, PwC, BCG, Bank of America, Barclays, Google, Wipro, Capgemini and ICICI Bank.

What the Numbers Mean

• The median is the steadier guide. Over recent seasons the average has moved between the mid-20s and about ₹30 LPA, while the median has stayed in the mid-20s. The highest package comes from a handful of top offers and is not a typical outcome.
• The mix leans towards consulting and finance, which together account for about 60% of offers. That is a strong signal if those are your goals; build skills early if they are not.
• Figures are gross CTC as reported by the institute. They can include bonuses and variable components, so in-hand pay in the first year is lower.
• There is no IPM-only breakdown, so the combined report is the number to track.

Campus, Location & Rankings

IIM Indore is on Rau-Pithampur Road in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a large and well-connected city. The campus is fully developed, with academic blocks, hostels, sports facilities and the scale that comes from running MBA, executive and doctoral programmes alongside the IPM. A major city also gives students easier access to internships, guest speakers and a wider professional network than a smaller-town campus.

IIM IPM programmes fall into three groups based on exam route and maturity. Indore is the benchmark of the established group.

Because IIM Ranchi also accepts IPMAT Indore scores, a single preparation cycle can open more than one door. Each institute still runs its own cutoffs and process.

Non-IIM alternatives include private BBA programmes with their own entrance tests, a university BBA or BCom followed by CAT, and newer four-year management degrees at a few IIMs with different entrance routes. Exit Options & Flexibility

The programme is not an all-or-nothing commitment. Students who complete the first three years and decide not to continue can exit with the first-phase degree, subject to the institute's rules. Continuing into the two-year MBA phase depends on meeting the required academic performance, so the three-year mark works as a checkpoint. Some students also use the third year to weigh CAT or other postgraduate options while holding their IPM seat as a fallback. Best fit: students who want the strongest brand in the IPM category, are ready for an interview stage, and can manage the fee with loans or aid. Less suitable if: fee is the binding constraint, or you want to avoid an interview-based process altogether.
