IIM Admission Criteria: Academic & Gender Diversity at IIMs

A 99 percentile isn’t the whole story. If you’re a non-engineer or female candidate, IIM selection criteria award extra diversity points. Here’s the complete institute-by-institute breakdown.

📊 8+ IIMs Compared 🎓 Non-Engineer Points 👩‍🎓 Female Candidate Bonus 🎯 Latest Data

Every year, a familiar complaint surfaces in CAT forums: “I scored 96 percentile and didn’t get a single IIM call, while someone with 91 percentile got four.” The answer almost always traces back to the same two factors — gender diversity and academic diversity scoring, quietly built into every IIM’s shortlisting formula alongside your CAT percentile. Most aspirants know these exist in some vague sense. Very few know exactly how much weight each IIM gives them, and almost nobody has compared the IIM admission criteria for non-engineers and female candidates side by side. This guide does exactly that — institute by institute, with the actual formulas, and a look at which IIMs are increasing this weightage for the current year versus which ones are cutting it.

How IIMs Score Non-Engineers & Female Candidates (Diversity Points Explained)

These aren’t vague ideas — they’re specific, scored components built into almost every IIM’s shortlisting and final-selection formula.

👥 Gender Diversity

Extra Points for Female / Non-Male Candidates

IIM batches have historically skewed heavily male, largely because engineering graduates — a male-dominated applicant pool — make up the majority of CAT test-takers. To correct this, most IIMs award additional composite-score points to female and transgender candidates, on top of their CAT percentile and academic record.

🎓 Academic Diversity

IIM Academic Diversity Points for Non-Engineering Backgrounds

Since engineering graduates dominate CAT applications, IIMs award extra points to candidates from non-engineering academic backgrounds — commerce, arts, science, law, and other disciplines — to build a more varied classroom. The exact discipline classifications and point values differ by institute.

Important: These bonuses apply after you clear an institute’s minimum CAT cutoff — they don’t override the cutoff gate itself. A diversity bonus can meaningfully lift your composite score and shortlist chances, but it can’t substitute for missing a minimum percentile requirement.

Institute-by-Institute Breakdown

IIM Ahmedabad

Female Score Raised From 2 to 3

IIMA’s Composite Score is CS = 0.65 × Normalised CAT + 0.35 × Application Rating, where the Application Rating includes a gender diversity component (E). For the latest batch, female and non-male candidates now score E = 3, up from 2 the previous cycle — a meaningful increase in a formula where every point matters. Male candidates score 0 on this component. The change is explicitly aimed at improving female representation in the incoming batch.

IIM Bangalore

Outcomes Are Already Shifting

IIMB’s composite formula blends CAT score (25-30%), academics (Class 10, 12, graduation), work experience, and WAT-PI performance, with extra points for both non-engineering backgrounds and gender diversity. The real story is in outcomes: women reportedly now make up 35-40% of the incoming batch, up from around 25% just five years ago — among the more visible diversity shifts of any IIM.

IIM Calcutta

PI-Heavy, With Gender Points Baked In

IIM Calcutta’s final formula gives the Personal Interview a dominant 48% weight, with CAT at 30% and WAT at 8%. Gender diversity points feature in the shortlisting formula, while work experience carries no weight in the initial selection — meaning freshers with strong academics and CAT scores aren’t structurally disadvantaged here the way they might be at institutes that reward work experience heavily.

IIM Lucknow

Equal 5% Split

IIM Lucknow weights CAT score at 60% for WAT-PI shortlisting, with Class 12 marks (10%) and academic and gender diversity each carrying a flat 5% weightage. Notably, Class 10 marks aren’t considered at all here — a point that matters if your school-leaving scores were weaker than your later academic record.

IIM Kozhikode

Combined Diversity Weight Rising

IIM Kozhikode gives CAT scores 45% weightage, academic diversity 10%, and gender diversity 5% — a combined diversity weight of 15%, up from 10% the previous cycle. That’s one of the largest explicit diversity allocations among the older, established IIMs.

IIM Indore

A Bigger Overhaul Than Just Diversity

IIM Indore’s criteria raised its minimum CAT cutoff to 90 overall / 80 sectional (General/EWS) — among the highest bars of any IIM — while introducing work experience into its formula for the first time. Its shortlisting stage allocates 7 points to combined diversity, and gender diversity carries 5 points at final selection, alongside CAT (40) and PI (45).

IIM Sambalpur

The Outlier: Weightage Cut in Half

Where most IIMs are holding steady or raising diversity weightage, IIM Sambalpur went the other way: gender diversity weightage dropped from 10% to 5%, while work experience (20%) remains its single largest non-CAT factor. Worth flagging specifically if you were counting on last year’s figures.

IIM Jammu

Gender Built Into the Cutoff Itself

IIM Jammu’s approach is structurally different from every other IIM on this list — covered in detail below, since it doesn’t just add bonus points at the final stage; it changes your eligibility cutoff itself based on gender.

The Latest Trend: Diversity Weightage Is Moving in Both Directions

The headline finding across this year’s cycle isn’t that “diversity bonuses are increasing” or “decreasing” uniformly — it’s that individual IIMs are making independent, sometimes opposite, decisions:

  • Increasing: IIM Ahmedabad (female score 2→3), IIM Kozhikode (combined diversity 10%→15%)
  • Decreasing: IIM Sambalpur (gender diversity 10%→5%)
  • Structurally evolving: IIM Indore (work experience added for the first time, alongside diversity scoring)

This matters practically: don’t assume last year’s data still applies, and don’t assume every IIM is moving the same direction. Check each target institute’s current-year notification individually rather than generalising from one headline you’ve seen about “IIMs increasing diversity weightage.”

IIM Jammu’s Unique System: Gender-Split Cutoffs

Most IIMs treat gender diversity as a bonus applied after you clear a single, gender-neutral CAT cutoff. IIM Jammu does something different — and more significant.

How it works: Instead of one cutoff per category (General, EWS, NC-OBC, SC, ST, PwD), IIM Jammu publishes fully separate cutoff rows for male, female, and transgender candidates within every category — 18 distinct rows in total instead of the usual 6. Female and transgender candidates receive roughly a 1-percentile sectional and 2-percentile overall relaxation within each category compared to male candidates in the same category.

On top of this eligibility-stage difference, IIM Jammu’s 100-point final composite score allocates 42 points to CAT, 30 to the Personal Interview, and 28 to a combined Profile score (10 Academic Profile + 10 Work Experience + 8 Gender Diversity). It also runs a Supplementary Admission Process (SAP) — a secondary PI pathway for candidates who meet IIM Jammu’s own shortlisting bar but don’t clear the standard CAP cutoff — adding yet another route in for well-rounded candidates who fall just short on percentile alone.

The Newer / CAP IIMs: A Broader Pattern

The ten IIMs coordinating through the Common Admission Process (CAP) — Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Trichy, Udaipur, Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, and Vizag — generally follow a more balanced model than the older IIMs:

  • CAT score typically carries 45-50% weightage — somewhat lower than at Ahmedabad or Lucknow (60-65%)
  • Gender and/or academic diversity together typically carry 4-10%, varying meaningfully by institute
  • Profile evaluation (academics + work experience + diversity combined) often runs 30-40% — notably higher than at CAT-score-dominant older IIMs, giving these institutes’ formulas real sensitivity to your non-CAT profile

Notable exception: IIM Rohtak places unusually heavy emphasis on school-level academics — 20% weightage each for Class 10 and Class 12 — while not scoring graduation performance or work experience at all in its formula, a distinctly different model worth knowing if your school marks were strong but your degree or work profile is thinner.

What This Means for Your IIM Selection Strategy

If You’re Female

Target IIMs With Higher Explicit Weightage

Institutes like Kozhikode (15% combined diversity), Jammu (gender-adjusted cutoffs plus 8 composite points), and Ahmedabad (raised female score) offer a structurally larger boost than institutes where gender diversity is a smaller, flatter percentage.

If You’re Non-Engineering

Your Academic Diversity Score Matters More at Some IIMs

Kozhikode’s 10% standalone academic diversity weight and Indore’s combined diversity scoring reward non-engineering backgrounds more explicitly than institutes where this is folded quietly into a broader “academic profile” bucket.

If You’re a Male Engineer

You’ll Need a Higher Percentile Buffer

As the largest, most competitive applicant segment with no diversity bonus at any institute, aim 5-7 percentile points above the published cutoff for your target IIMs — the diversity and work-experience scoring of other candidates means the effective bar for this segment runs higher than the headline cutoff suggests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all IIMs give a gender diversity bonus?

Most major IIMs incorporate some form of gender diversity scoring in their shortlisting or final-selection formula, though the exact weightage varies significantly — from a flat 5% at several institutes to a more structurally embedded system like IIM Jammu’s gender-specific cutoffs.

Can a diversity bonus help me get in below the minimum CAT cutoff for female candidates?

No. Diversity bonuses apply after you clear an institute’s minimum eligibility cutoff — they boost your composite score and shortlist ranking, but they cannot substitute for missing the minimum percentile requirement itself.

Which IIM gives the highest gender diversity weightage?

Among institutes with explicit published figures, IIM Jammu’s system is the most structurally significant since it affects the eligibility cutoff itself, not just a bonus score. Among percentage-based weightages, IIM Kozhikode’s combined 15% diversity allocation (10% academic + 5% gender) is among the highest explicitly stated.

Is academic diversity the same as gender diversity?

No. IIM academic diversity points reward candidates from non-engineering academic backgrounds (commerce, arts, science, law, etc.), while gender diversity rewards female and transgender candidates. They’re scored as separate components, though some institutes report a combined percentage for both.

Has any IIM reduced its diversity weightage recently?

Yes — IIM Sambalpur cut its gender diversity weightage from 10% to 5% for the latest admission cycle, a notable exception to the broader trend of institutes maintaining or increasing this weightage.

Do these weightages change every year?

Yes, frequently. Several IIMs revised their diversity weightage for this cycle alone — always verify current-year figures against each institute’s official admission notification rather than relying on the previous year’s numbers.
