IIM Ahmedabad's official admission policy for the PGP batch lays out, in precise and unusually specific detail, exactly how every CAT applicant's profile gets converted into a shortlisting score. This guide walks through that entire document — eligibility rules, the Application Rating formula, the full 20-discipline classification system, the exact cutoff table, and the final selection weightage — organized for quick reference rather than as a chronological read-through of a policy PDF. IIM Ahmedabad Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (relaxed to 45% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) from a UGC-recognised university, requiring a minimum of three years of education after Class 12. Final-year students may apply provisionally, but must submit a certificate confirming their final results by June 30, with marksheets and degree certificates due by December 31 — missing this deadline results in automatic cancellation of provisional admission.

IIM Ahmedabad Selection Process

Shortlisting runs entirely on a metric IIM Ahmedabad calls the Composite Score. Here's the full sequence:

  1. Basic filters are applied: candidates must be 19 or older by June 30, be Indian nationals, and have applied to the 2-year full-time PGP.
  2. A Raw Application Rating is calculated from Class 10%, Class 12%, graduation %, gender, and full-time work experience.
  3. The Raw Application Rating is normalized and combined with the CAT percentile (35%/65% split) to produce a Raw Composite Score.
  4. The Raw Composite Score is normalized again — this time within the candidate's specific undergraduate discipline.
  5. CAT minimum cutoffs are applied to the normalized scores to generate the AWT & PI shortlist.
  6. After AWT & PI, a Final Composite Score (FCS) determines admission offers.

Application Rating: The Five Components

The Raw Application Rating (AR) is the sum of five separately scored components:

ComponentRating SymbolBasis
Class 10 PerformanceRating Score APercentage scored in Class 10 board exams
Class 12 PerformanceRating Score BPercentage scored in Class 12 board exams
Graduation PerformanceRating Score CPercentage in the bachelor's degree
Work ExperienceRating Score DFull-time work experience as declared on the CAT form
Gender DiversityRating Score EFlat points for non-male candidates

Raw Application Rating = A + B + C + D + E

Rating Table for Class 10, 12 & Graduation (A, B & C)

All three academic components — Class 10, Class 12, and graduation — are scored on one identical percentage-to-rating scale:

Percentage ScoredRating Score (A, B & C)
≤ 55%1
> 55% and ≤ 60%2
> 60% and ≤ 70%3
> 70% and ≤ 80%5
> 80% and ≤ 90%8
> 90%10

Scores in every subject appearing on the Class 10 and 12 marksheet are considered for this calculation — regardless of whether the board itself includes all of them when computing your official percentage.

Work Experience (Rating D) & Gender Diversity (Rating E)

Full-Time Work ExperienceRating Score D
Less than 12 months0
12 to 36 months0.20 × (months of experience − 11)
More than 36 months5 (maximum)

Gender Diversity (Rating E) is a flat addition: 3 points for all non-male candidates, 0 points for male candidates.

How the Raw Composite Score Is Built

Once A through E are summed into the Raw Application Rating, it's normalized against the average of the top 50 AR scores across the entire applicant pool. That normalized AR receives 35% weightage; the applicant's total CAT percentile receives the remaining 65%:

Raw Composite Score = 0.35 × Normalized Application Rating + 0.65 × (Total CAT Percentile ÷ 100)

All 20 Undergraduate Disciplines

Every applicant's Bachelor's programme is classified into exactly one of these 20 categories, which is where discipline-based normalization (below) comes in:

Complete List (as per official policy)

Fashion & DesignComputer Science & ITCommerce, Accounting & FinanceMedical & Health SciencesStatistics & Actuarial ScienceEconomicsAgriculture & Allied SciencesSocial SciencesArts & HumanitiesHospitality & Food SciencesArchitecture & PlanningJournalism & MediaLife SciencesLawEngineering & TechnologyMathematicsManagementOthersPure SciencesProfessional (CA/CS/ICWA/FIAI)

Final discretion over which discipline a specific academic programme is classified into rests entirely with IIM Ahmedabad's Admissions Committee. If your degree could plausibly fit more than one category, it's worth confirming directly with the institute.

Discipline-Based Normalization: Why It Matters

The Raw Composite Score is normalized a second time — not against the whole applicant pool, but specifically within your assigned discipline:

Normalized Composite Score = Raw Composite Score ÷ (Average of the top 1% raw composite scores within your discipline)

Because some disciplines have very few or very many applicants, IIM Ahmedabad applies a floor of at least 5 and a cap of 100 raw scores when calculating that top-1% benchmark, keeping the comparison stable regardless of discipline size.

Multiple undergraduate degrees: If you hold more than one Bachelor's degree spanning different disciplines, IIM Ahmedabad calculates a separate raw and normalized composite score for each discipline your degrees represent — and uses whichever normalized score is highest for shortlisting purposes.
Integrated Master's / dual-degree candidates: If you're pursuing or completed an integrated Master's or dual-degree programme directly after Class 12, your percentage and discipline classification are both based on that integrated programme — not on any separate bachelor's-equivalent milestone within it. Degrees obtained after your bachelor's or integrated Master's (i.e., postgraduate qualifications) are not considered for this classification or scoring at all.

IIM Ahmedabad CAT Cutoffs

Only candidates clearing both the overall and every sectional cutoff — with a positive raw score in each section — proceed further. IIM Ahmedabad publishes separate cutoffs for PwD and non-PwD candidates within each category:

CategoryOverall (Non-PwD)Sectional (Non-PwD)Overall (PwD)Sectional (PwD)
General, EWS95858575
NC-OBC90808070
SC85757565
ST75656555

Transgender candidates in the General category follow the same cutoffs as NC-OBC. IIM Ahmedabad reserves the right to revise these cutoffs based on the applicant pool and CAT score distribution each cycle.

Final Selection: PI, AWT & the Final Composite Score

After the shortlist is generated (with reservation-category representation built in), shortlisted candidates attend the Analytical Writing Test and Personal Interview. Their Final Composite Score (FCS) is then calculated as:

FCS = 0.50 × Normalized PI Score + 0.10 × Normalized AWT Score + 0.40 × Normalized Composite Score

Final selection is done separately within each reservation category (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PwD), based strictly on FCS ranking, with seat proportions mandated by law: 27% NC-OBC, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 5% PwD, and up to 10% EWS.

Special Cases & Fine Print

CA / CS / ICWA / FIAI candidates

For CA/CS/ICWA candidates, Rating Score C is computed as the average of Inter and Final marks percentage. For FIAI (Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of India) candidates, the aggregate marks percentage entered on the CAT form is used instead.

If your university doesn't publish a percentage

If your institution doesn't award marks as a percentage, IIM Ahmedabad computes it based on marks obtained across all subjects listed on your marksheet. If a letter-grade-only system is used, you'll need an official equivalence certificate from your institution — submitted at the time of interview, if shortlisted.

Incomplete degrees at the time of application

If you haven't completed your bachelor's degree yet, your percentage is computed based on the latest available marksheets. You must be able to provide marksheets for all completed semesters/years at any stage of the process — withholding available marksheets can lead to disqualification.

Government policy contingency

If the Government of India issues specific guidelines affecting the process, IIM Ahmedabad reserves the right to continue with the standard AWT & PI process and/or use an alternative mechanism, such as a supplementary test or additional information request.

Refund policy

A processing fee of ₹1,000 is deducted from any applicable refund, per the Ministry of Education's standing notification on this matter. The remainder is returned to the original payment account.
