What Makes CMAT Different
No Sectional Time Lock
Unlike CAT or IPMAT, CMAT gives you the full 180 minutes to allocate across all five sections however you like — there’s no forced 40-minute cap per section. If Quantitative Techniques is your strength and General Awareness is a quick tick-through, you can weight your time accordingly.
Zero Penalty for Skipping
Unattempted questions cost nothing at all — not even the small skip-penalty XAT applies. Combined with a moderate 4-mark-for-correct, 1-mark-off-for-wrong scheme, this makes CMAT a comparatively low-risk exam to attempt aggressively on questions you’re reasonably confident about.
A Dedicated Innovation & Entrepreneurship Section
This is CMAT’s genuinely unique section — no other major MBA entrance exam tests it. Eligibility
You need a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Final-year students who will complete their degree requirements before the admission deadline can also apply. There is no upper age limit and no work-experience requirement. There’s no fixed minimum percentage at the CMAT registration stage itself — but individual accepting institutes commonly require a minimum aggregate (typically 50%, 45% for reserved categories) as part of their own eligibility check once you apply to them directly.

CMAT Exam Application & Fees
The application follows a predictable sequence each cycle, even though the exact dates shift:
1. Register on the official NTA CMAT portal
Create an account with a valid mobile number and an active email ID. NTA sends confirmations and updates to both, so use details you check regularly.
2. Fill in the application form
Enter personal and academic details and choose your exam city preferences (recent cycles have asked for several, in order of preference).
3. Upload photograph, signature and certificates
Use the specified size and format. Category or PwD certificates are needed where applicable.
4. Pay the fee online
Only candidates who successfully complete the fee payment are treated as having completed the application, so don’t stop at form submission. Download and keep the confirmation page.
5. Use the correction window carefully
NTA usually opens a short, one-time correction window after the deadline. It is limited, so check every detail before you first submit.
Fees: In the most recent cycle, the application fee was ₹2,500 for General category male candidates and ₹1,250 for General category female candidates, EWS/SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD candidates of either gender, and third-gender candidates. Payment is online only — net banking, card, or UPI — and is non-refundable once submitted. NTA revises fees from time to time, so confirm the amount in the current bulletin.

Selection Process
CMAT itself is only the screening stage. Once your score and percentile are out, you apply separately to each institute you’re targeting, and every institute runs its own shortlisting and final-selection process independently — there’s no single centralised counselling the way CAT-based IIM admissions work. Most institutes combine your CMAT percentile with academic record, and a GD/WAT/PI round, though the exact weightage varies significantly by college: some government institutes like the Maharashtra DTE colleges shortlist almost purely on percentile with minimal further rounds, while many private B-schools run a fuller composite process that includes group discussion, written ability, and personal interview.
CMAT Result, Scorecard & Percentile
NTA declares the CMAT result on the official portal, usually within a few weeks of the exam. You log in to download a scorecard that shows your section-wise and overall performance along with your percentile.
Why Percentile, Not Raw Score, Is What Counts
Your percentile shows the share of candidates you outperformed, so the same raw score can translate into a different percentile in a different year, depending on paper difficulty and how many candidates appeared. That is why colleges and cutoff lists are expressed in percentile. When you compare yourself with a college’s cutoff, always use percentile, and look at more than one year of data.
Score Validity
A CMAT score is generally valid for the admission cycle that follows the exam, not for later years. If you plan to reappear, treat each year’s score as a fresh attempt and confirm validity in the bulletin.

The pattern worth noticing: the government-run Maharashtra institutes — JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA — offer by far the best fee-to-placement ratio of any CMAT-accepting college, since their fee structures are a fraction of comparable private institutes while placement outcomes stay competitive or better. That ROI gap is exactly why their limited CMAT seats attract such a disproportionately high cutoff.
JBIMS & SIMSREE Through CMAT: The DTE CAP Route
Both institutes fill the overwhelming majority of their seats through MAH-CET, but a small share of seats is open to All-India candidates on the basis of CAT or CMAT. These seats are not allotted directly by the colleges or by NTA. They go through the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) run by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Maharashtra.
You must register separately for CAP
A good CMAT percentile alone does not put you in the running. You need to register for the state’s CAP process when DTE Maharashtra opens it, and the window is usually short, so keep an eye on the notification.
The cutoff for these seats is extremely high
In recent cycles, published estimates put JBIMS at roughly 99.9 percentile and SIMSREE somewhat lower, around 99.7, though both vary by year and category. This is a narrower door, not an easier one.
Treat it as a bonus, not your main plan
Because the All-India share is small, build your college list around realistic bands and treat these seats as a stretch attempt.

If Maharashtra government colleges like JBIMS, SIMSREE, and PUMBA are your primary target, MAH-CET is the exam that matters most — it fills the bulk of their seats, with CMAT and CAT covering only a narrow All-India sliver. For everything outside Maharashtra’s state quota, CMAT’s national reach makes it the more versatile single exam to prepare for alongside CAT.
How to Prepare for CMAT Exam
Use the lack of a sectional timer to play to your strengths
Since all 180 minutes are shared across sections, front-load time on whichever section you’re fastest and most accurate in, rather than splitting time evenly by default.
Attempt aggressively — the risk-reward math favours it
With zero penalty for skipping but only a modest −1 for a wrong answer against a +4 correct, an educated guess on a question you’re reasonably confident about is usually worth the risk. A guess breaks even at just a 20% chance of being right.
Don’t skip General Awareness or Innovation & Entrepreneurship prep
Both sections reward focused static preparation more than problem-solving speed, making them genuinely high-return sections for candidates who put in consistent, targeted effort rather than leaving them to chance.
Shortlist colleges by realistic percentile band, not aspiration alone
With 1,300+ accepting institutes spanning a huge cutoff range, build a spread across a few percentile bands rather than fixating on the 99+ names — CMAT’s real strength is the number of solid options available below the very top.
If Maharashtra government colleges are the goal, prepare MAH-CET as the primary exam
JBIMS, SIMSREE, and PUMBA fill the overwhelming majority of seats through MAH-CET. Treat CMAT as a secondary, narrower shot at these three rather than your main route in.
Take full-length mocks and review every one
Your time-allocation plan only becomes reliable after several full-length mocks. After each one, log which section cost you time and which questions you should have skipped.
After CMAT: GD, WAT and PI
For many colleges, CMAT gets you the call, and the next rounds decide the offer. Start preparing while you wait for the CMAT result, not after it arrives.
Group Discussion (GD)
Colleges look for clear thinking, listening and composure, not volume. Practise structuring a point in a few sentences, building on others’ points, and staying calm under disagreement. Read current affairs and business news regularly to have material ready.
Written Ability Test (WAT)
A short essay under time pressure, judged on structure, clarity and relevance. Practise writing brief, well-organised essays on business, economy and social topics within the time limit.
Personal Interview (PI)
Expect questions on your academics, projects, internships, strengths and career goals, plus current affairs. Prepare honest, specific answers about why you want an MBA and why that particular college, and be ready to discuss anything on your resume in depth.
