JIPMAT Exam: Eligibility, Pattern, Syllabus, Cutoff, Fees & Selection Process

One national test, two IIMs, zero interviews. Here’s exactly how JIPMAT works, how IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya each pick their batch differently, and everything else you need before June.

JIPMAT — the Joint Integrated Programme in Management Admission Test — is the National Testing Agency’s single entrance exam for two IIMs at once: IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya, both offering a 5-year Integrated Programme in Management straight after Class 12. One test, one application, two very different admission policies waiting on the other side of it — neither of which involves a Group Discussion or Personal Interview. What follows is the exam pattern, the syllabus, how each institute actually weighs your score once you clear it, current fees, and an honest look at where IPM placements for this still-young programme actually stand.

Programme Structure

Both institutes run the same broad shape: a 3-year foundation phase covering core business fundamentals, followed by a 2-year management phase that merges into the institute’s flagship MBA/PGDM cohort. Complete all 5 years and you graduate with a dual BBA + MBA credential from an IIM established under the IIM Act, 2017 — the same legal standing as an IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Bangalore degree, even though the brand recognition and placement maturity are still catching up, since both institutes are considerably younger.

Eligibility

CriterionRequirement
Class 12Passed in 2024/2025, or appearing in 2026, any stream, with results declared before the institute’s cutoff date
Class 12 MarksMinimum 60% aggregate (55% for SC/ST/PwD)
Class 10Passed in or after 2022, minimum 60% aggregate (55% for SC/ST/PwD)
NationalityIndian citizen
Age LimitNo upper age limit prescribed by NTA
ReservationAs per Government of India norms — SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, PwD

Eligibility years and gap-year rules vary slightly between IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya — confirm both institutes’ specific conditions if you have a gap year between Class 10 and 12, since this is the one area where the two IIMs’ criteria genuinely diverge.

JIPMAT Exam Pattern

JIPMAT is a Computer-Based Test conducted by NTA in a single shift, and the pattern is identical regardless of which institute you’re targeting — unlike the selection process afterward, which is not.

SectionQuestionsMarks
Quantitative Aptitude (QA)~33~132
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)~33~132
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)~34~136
Total100400

Format: 100 MCQs, 400 total marks, 150 minutes, English medium only. Marking is +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one, with no marks for unattempted questions. This is a heavier negative-marking ratio relative to total marks than most other B-school entrance exams, so calculated attempts matter more here than raw speed.

Exam pattern, timing, and city list are set fresh by NTA each cycle. Confirm the current year’s exact sectional split and any sectional time limit against the official JIPMAT information bulletin before finalising your prep plan.

Application & Fees

Applications open online through the official NTA JIPMAT portal, typically in April, with the exam itself held in early-to-mid June. The application fee is modest compared to most B-school entrance tests — expect roughly ₹2,200 for General/OBC candidates and ₹1,100 for SC/ST/PwD candidates, though NTA confirms the exact figure only in that year’s information bulletin.

Selection Process

This is where JIPMAT stops being one exam and becomes two separate admission processes. Neither institute holds a Group Discussion or Personal Interview — your JIPMAT score and academic record do all the talking — but they don’t weigh those inputs the same way.

IIM Jammu

IIM Jammu builds a composite merit score combining your JIPMAT percentile with Class 10 and 12 marks, and adds an additional weightage for female and transgender candidates as a gender-diversity measure. It also applies sectional cutoffs — historically around the 50th percentile per section for General category — so a strong overall score with one very weak section can still fall short.

IIM Bodh Gaya

IIM Bodh Gaya’s policy has shifted over recent cycles — some years weighing JIPMAT score alongside board marks, with a more recent move toward relying on the JIPMAT score alone for shortlisting, alongside a set-aside portion of seats for female candidates. It does not apply sectional cutoffs, only an overall score threshold.

Selection weightage at both institutes has changed from cycle to cycle in recent years — including a reported shift for IIM Bodh Gaya toward 100% JIPMAT-score weighting for the 2026 batch. Treat any specific percentage split as illustrative and verify both institutes’ current admission policy documents directly before applying.

Expected Cutoff

Neither institute publishes a fixed advance cutoff — it moves with that year’s paper difficulty and applicant pool. Based on recent-cycle trends, General category candidates have generally needed a composite score somewhere in the 300-320 out of 400 range to be seriously in contention at IIM Jammu, with EWS/OBC trending slightly lower; IIM Bodh Gaya’s threshold has moved similarly, without the added complexity of sectional minimums.

Official cutoffs are released only after each year’s results. Use these ranges for rough benchmarking, not as a hard target.

Institute Fees

The fee gap between the two institutes is the single biggest differentiator in this comparison, and it’s a large one.

InstituteApprox. Total Fee (5 Years)
IIM Jammu~₹43-44 lakh
IIM Bodh Gaya~₹28-29 lakh

Years 4 and 5 at both institutes follow the prevailing MBA/PGDM fee at the time, which is revised periodically, so the total for any given entering batch will differ from the figures above by the time they graduate. Part of IIM Jammu’s higher fee reflects its more developed permanent campus, while IIM Bodh Gaya currently operates from a temporary campus pending its permanent one.

Confirm the latest fee circular directly with each institute — these numbers are revised annually and vary meaningfully across third-party sources.

Placements

Here’s the honest picture: JIPMAT-admitted IPM batches only started in 2021, so neither institute has a fully placed 5-year IPM batch yet. What exists so far is IPM summer internship data, plus each institute’s flagship MBA placement record, which gives a reasonable — though not identical — proxy for where IPM placements are likely to land once those batches graduate.

On rank and campus infrastructure, IIM Jammu edges ahead; on cost, IIM Bodh Gaya wins by a wide margin — over ₹14 lakh cheaper for what is, on paper, a comparable IIM credential and entrance pathway. Neither institute has placement data mature enough yet to be a deciding factor on its own, which makes fee, seat availability, and personal fit the more useful levers for this specific decision today.

How JIPMAT Differs From IPMAT (Indore & Rohtak)

If you’re applying across multiple IPM options, it helps to know these are not the same exam wearing different names.

ParameterJIPMATIPMAT (Indore / Rohtak)
Conducted ByNTA (national-level)IIM Indore / IIM Rohtak individually
Accepted ByIIM Jammu, IIM Bodh GayaRespective institute (Indore or Rohtak) — occasionally a few other institutes

Format100 MCQs, 400 marks, 150 minutesIndore: MCQ + Short-Answer hybrid; Rohtak: 120 MCQs, 480 marks, 120 minutes

Since the syllabi overlap heavily across all three exams, most serious IPM aspirants prepare for JIPMAT, IPMAT Indore, and IPMAT Rohtak together rather than picking just one — the marginal extra prep for each additional exam is small compared to having more shots at an IIM seat.

How to Prepare

Respect the negative marking more than you would elsewhere

A wrong answer costs a full mark against a possible 4 — a steeper ratio than several other exams in this space. Build a genuine “attempt only if reasonably sure” habit in mocks, not just on exam day.

Don’t neglect DILR because it’s grouped with Data Interpretation

DILR carries roughly a third of the paper. Treat logical reasoning sub-topics — seating arrangements, puzzles, coding — as seriously as the DI charts and caselets.

If IIM Jammu is your target, train section-wise, not just overall

Its sectional cutoffs mean a strong QA score can’t rescue a weak VARC section. Track your sectional percentiles in every mock, not just your composite score.

Your board marks matter, so don’t treat JIPMAT prep in isolation

Both institutes weigh Class 10/12 academics into the final decision to some degree. Keep your board exam preparation on track alongside JIPMAT prep rather than deprioritising one for the other.

Register for JIPMAT, IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak together

The prep overlap is substantial, the application fees are all modest, and each additional exam widens your shot at an IIM seat for very little extra cost.

Admission Timeline

JIPMAT applications typically open in mid-April, with the correction window in early-to-mid May and the exam held in the first or second week of June. Answer keys follow within a couple of weeks, results are usually out by mid-to-late June, and each institute runs its own Expression of Interest and merit-list process independently after that — there is no centralised JIPMAT counselling. Exact dates shift every cycle, so confirm against the official NTA JIPMAT notification for the current year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is JIPMAT?

JIPMAT is a national-level entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency for admission to the 5-year Integrated Programme in Management at IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya.

What is the JIPMAT exam pattern?

100 MCQs across Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, for 400 total marks, in 150 minutes, with +4/−1 marking.

Is there a Personal Interview or Group Discussion for JIPMAT admission?

No. Neither IIM Jammu nor IIM Bodh Gaya conducts a GD or PI for IPM admission — selection is based entirely on the JIPMAT score along with Class 10 and 12 academic performance.

How many seats are available through JIPMAT?

260 seats in total — 140 at IIM Jammu and 120 at IIM Bodh Gaya — though intake can be revised, so confirm against the current year’s notification.

Which is cheaper, IIM Jammu or IIM Bodh Gaya?

IIM Bodh Gaya, by a significant margin — its total 5-year fee runs around ₹28-29 lakh compared to roughly ₹43-44 lakh at IIM Jammu.

Are JIPMAT and IPMAT the same exam?

No. JIPMAT is a separate, NTA-conducted exam accepted only by IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya. IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak are each conducted independently by their respective institutes, with different formats and — unlike JIPMAT — a mandatory Personal Interview round.

What are the placement prospects for JIPMAT-admitted students?

Final IPM placement data isn’t available yet at either institute, since the first JIPMAT-admitted batches are only now approaching graduation. Each institute’s flagship MBA placements — averaging around ₹16 lakh at IIM Jammu and ₹13 lakh at IIM Bodh Gaya in 2025 — offer a reasonable, though not guaranteed, proxy.
