XAT Exam: Pattern, Selection Process, Cutoff, Fees & Placements

The only major MBA entrance exam with a Decision Making section, a General Knowledge component that skips your percentile but not your interview, and a marking scheme that punishes leaving questions blank. Here’s exactly how XAT works, what XLRI and 160+ other B-schools actually do with your score, and how to prepare for a section no other exam tests.

🏛️ Conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur 📝 95 Qs · 180 Minutes · 4 Sections 🎯 160+ B-Schools Accept XAT 💰 ~₹30.5L XLRI PGDM Fee

XAT — the Xavier Aptitude Test — is XLRI Jamshedpur’s entrance exam, and it’s the one major national MBA test that refuses to be a CAT clone. Where CAT sticks to VARC, DILR and QA, XAT adds a Decision Making section that behaves nothing like a typical aptitude question, and closes with a General Knowledge section that doesn’t touch your percentile but quietly follows you into the interview room. Score comes from XLRI Jamshedpur, and it’s used well beyond XLRI itself — over 160 business schools across India accept XAT scores for admission. What follows is the current exam pattern, the marking scheme that trips up first-timers, XLRI’s own selection formula, and an honest look at fees and placements.

What Makes XAT Different

Three things separate XAT from every other national MBA entrance test, and all three change how you should prepare.

The Decision Making Section

This is XAT’s signature section and it isn’t an aptitude test in the usual sense — it’s a set of business caselets built around ethical dilemmas, HR conflicts, and managerial trade-offs, typically arranged as seven sets of three questions each. There’s no formula to apply; the section rewards consistent, balanced judgment over clever shortcuts, which makes it genuinely hard to game with pure practice volume.

General Knowledge That Skips Your Percentile

GK sits in its own 10-minute Part 2, carries no negative marking, and — this is the part most first-time XAT takers miss — is not used to calculate your overall percentile at all. XLRI and other institutes instead pull the GK score back out during the GD/PI stage. Practically: attempt every GK question freely, since there’s nothing to lose, but don’t expect a strong GK score to rescue a weak Part 1 percentile.

No Standalone Essay

XAT used to include an Analytical Essay Writing (AEW) component on exam day. That’s gone since XAT 2025 — AEW is now administered as part of XLRI’s GD/PI selection round instead, not as a timed section within the exam itself.

XAT Exam Eligibility

XAT eligibility is deliberately simple. You need a Bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration, in any discipline, from a recognised university. Final-year students can apply, provided they complete their degree requirements before the institute’s specified deadline. There’s no fixed age limit and no minimum percentage requirement at the XAT level — though individual XAT-accepting institutes may apply their own minimum marks criteria once you’re shortlisted.

XAT Exam Pattern

PartSectionApprox. QuestionsDuration
Part 1Verbal & Logical Ability (VALR)26170 minutes (shared, no fixed sectional limit)
Decision Making (DM)21
Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QADI)28
Part 2General Knowledge (GK)2010 minutes
Total~95180 minutes

Part 1’s three sections share one 170-minute pool with no individual sectional lock, so you can move freely between VALR, DM and QADI within that window — but once Part 1 closes, you cannot go back to it during the 10-minute GK window that follows. A 5-minute keyboard check runs between the two parts. Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation carries the most questions (28) and is widely considered the toughest and most time-consuming section; Decision Making, while unusual, is generally rated easy-to-moderate once you’re used to the caselet format.

XAT Exam Marking Scheme

RuleDetail
Correct Answer+1 mark (Part 1 sections)
Incorrect Answer (Part 1)−0.25 marks
Unattempted Questions (Part 1)No penalty for the first 8 skipped; −0.10 for every skip beyond that
General Knowledge (Part 2)+1 for correct, no negative marking, not counted toward percentile
The unattempted-question penalty beyond 8 skips has applied consistently through recent cycles, and its removal has been floated for XAT 2027 but is not yet confirmed. Verify the current rule against the official XAT notification before building an attempt strategy around it.

XAT doesn’t publish an official section-wise syllabus — what’s listed above is drawn from consistent patterns across recent years’ papers. Arithmetic and Data Interpretation together account for the bulk of QADI, while Decision Making leans heaviest on business-scenario and managerial-dilemma caselets rather than ethics questions in isolation.

XAT Application & Fees

XAT registration typically opens in mid-July and closes in the first week of December, with the exam itself held on the first Sunday of January. The registration fee has run around ₹2,300 in recent cycles, and applying to specific XLRI programmes (BM, HRM) requires a separate, additional fee per programme at the time of registration. Confirm the exact current fee on the official XAT portal, since it’s revised each cycle.

XLRI Selection Process

Clearing an XAT cutoff only earns you a shortlist call — it doesn’t decide admission by itself. XLRI’s process runs in three stages: the XAT score gets you shortlisted, your academic record and the score itself feed into a composite, and the GD/PI (now including the Analytical Essay Writing component) round decides the final list. Shortlisting requires clearing both the overall percentile cutoff and the sectional cutoffs in all three Part 1 sections — missing even one sectional cutoff can keep you out of the interview room regardless of a strong overall score. XLRI applies different cutoffs by programme, by engineering/non-engineering background, and by gender, a structure aimed at balancing diversity within the batch. Shortlisted candidates then go through GD/PI/AEW rounds across multiple cities — typically Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Jamshedpur — usually between February and March.

XLRI Cutoff (Recent Trend)

ProgrammeOverall PercentileKey Sectional Cutoff

PGDM-BM (Female)~91Decision Making ~85+
PGDM-HRM (Male, Engineer)~95VALR ~85+
PGDM-HRM (Male, Non-Engineer)~93VALR ~85+
PGDM-HRM (Female, Engineer)~90VALR ~85+
PGDM-HRM (Female, Non-Engineer)~87VALR ~85+

These figures reflect the most recent published cutoff trend and shift a little every cycle based on paper difficulty and applicant pool. Note the pattern: BM leans more heavily on Decision Making performance, HRM leans more heavily on Verbal & Logical Ability — worth knowing before you decide where to put your extra prep hours.

Official cutoffs are released only after each year’s results, roughly a week after the scorecard. Use this table for planning, not as a guaranteed threshold.

Median Package~₹29 LPA
Highest Domestic Offer~₹59 LPA
Highest International Offer~₹1.1 crore

These placement figures cover the combined PGDM-BM and PGDM-HRM cohort across XLRI’s Jamshedpur and Delhi-NCR campuses. Consulting is the largest recruiting sector at roughly 36% of offers, followed by BFSI, IT, and Sales & Marketing. XLRI also runs a separate one-year PGDM-GM programme for working professionals, with its own distinct placement process and a lower average package reflecting that different cohort.

Other XAT-Accepting Colleges

XLRI is the headline name, but XAT’s reach goes well beyond it — over 160 B-schools accept the score, including several long-established, well-recruited institutes outside the XLRI family.

Prominent XAT-Accepting Institutes

XIM Bhubaneswar (XIMB)Goa Institute of Management (GIM)LIBA ChennaiTAPMI ManipalXIME BangaloreIMT GhaziabadGreat Lakes ChennaiXavier Institute of Management, Kolkata

Each institute sets its own overall and sectional cutoffs independently — typically released within a week of the XAT result — so a score that falls short of XLRI’s threshold can still comfortably clear several other well-regarded XAT-accepting institutes. Worth building a spread of target institutes rather than fixating on XLRI alone.

The two exams overlap enough on VARC/QA fundamentals that most serious MBA aspirants prepare for both together, but Decision Making is the one section that genuinely needs XAT-specific practice — CAT prep alone won’t cover it, and it’s worth a dedicated prep block rather than an afterthought squeezed in during the final weeks.

How to Prepare for XAT Exam

Give Decision Making its own dedicated prep track

It isn’t a formula-based section, so volume alone won’t crack it. Work through real caselets regularly, and train yourself to favour balanced, stakeholder-aware choices over extreme or purely self-interested options.

Attempt every GK question — there’s nothing to lose

No negative marking means a free attempt on all 20 questions. It won’t move your percentile, but a strong GK score can genuinely help at the GD/PI stage, so keep a light, consistent current-affairs habit going through the year.

Respect the unattempted-question penalty

Unlike most exams, leaving too many questions blank in Part 1 actively costs you marks beyond the first 8 skips. Build a “when to guess” strategy in your mocks rather than defaulting to skip when unsure.

Clear every sectional cutoff, not just the overall

XLRI’s shortlisting is all-or-nothing across three separate sectional thresholds. A strong QADI score cannot compensate for a weak Decision Making section if DM falls below its own cutoff — track your sectional percentile in every mock, not just your composite.

Build a spread of XAT-accepting institutes, not just XLRI

With 160+ B-schools accepting the score at varying cutoffs, treat XAT prep as opening multiple doors rather than a single XLRI-or-nothing bet.

XAT Admission Timeline

XAT registration typically opens around mid-July and closes in the first week of December, with the exam held on the first Sunday of January — XAT 2027 is scheduled for January 3, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Results are usually declared around mid-to-late January, following which XLRI and other accepting institutes release their own cutoffs within about a week. GD/PI/AEW rounds run from February through March across multiple cities, with final selection lists following after that. Exact dates shift every cycle — confirm against the official XAT notification at xatonline.in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is XAT?

XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is the national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, accepted by XLRI’s own programmes and by more than 160 other B-schools across India.

What is the XAT exam pattern?

95 MCQs across four sections — Verbal & Logical Ability (26), Decision Making (21), Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (28), and General Knowledge (20) — in 180 minutes, split into a 170-minute Part 1 and a 10-minute GK-only Part 2.

Does the GK section count toward my XAT percentile?

No. GK carries no negative marking and is excluded from the overall percentile calculation, but XLRI and other institutes may still use your GK score during the GD/PI selection stage.

What is the XAT cutoff for XLRI?

Recent trends show PGDM-BM requiring roughly 91-96 overall percentile (varying by gender) with a Decision Making sectional cutoff around 85+, and PGDM-HRM requiring roughly 87-95 overall percentile with a Verbal & Logical Ability sectional cutoff around 85+.

How much does XLRI’s PGDM cost, and what does it pay?

The two-year PGDM-BM/HRM programme costs roughly ₹30.5 lakh (excluding hostel and mess). The most recent combined placement cycle recorded an average package around ₹31.4 LPA, a median around ₹29 LPA, and a highest domestic offer around ₹59 LPA.

Is there still an essay in the XAT exam?

Not as a timed exam-day section. Since XAT 2025, the Analytical Essay Writing component has moved to XLRI’s GD/PI selection round instead.

Can I get into a good B-school with XAT if I don’t clear XLRI’s cutoff?

Yes. Over 160 institutes accept XAT scores, each setting independent cutoffs — well-regarded names like XIMB, GIM Goa, LIBA, and TAPMI are realistic targets even at percentiles below XLRI’s threshold.
