Eligibility

You need a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Final-year students who will complete their degree requirements before the admission deadline can also apply. There’s no fixed minimum percentage at the CMAT registration stage itself — but individual accepting institutes commonly require a minimum aggregate (typically 50%, 45% for reserved categories) as part of their own eligibility check once you apply to them directly.

CMAT Exam Application & Fees

CMAT registration typically opens in October and closes in the fourth week of November, with the exam held in the last week of January. The application fee has run around ₹2,500 for General category male candidates and ₹1,250 for General category female candidates, EWS/SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD candidates of either gender, and third-gender candidates. Payment is online only — net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI — and is non-refundable once submitted.

Selection Process

CMAT itself is only the screening stage. Once your score and percentile are out, you apply separately to each institute you’re targeting, and every institute runs its own shortlisting and final-selection process independently — there’s no centralised counselling the way JIPMAT or CAT-based IIM admissions work. Most institutes combine your CMAT percentile with academic record, and a GD/WAT/PI round, though the exact weightage varies significantly by college: some government institutes like the Maharashtra DTE colleges shortlist almost purely on percentile with minimal further rounds, while many private B-schools run a fuller composite process that includes group discussion, written ability, and personal interview.

Note the JBIMS and SIMSREE nuance: both are Maharashtra government institutes that fill the overwhelming majority of their seats through MAH-CET, but each reserves a small number of All-India seats specifically for CAT and CMAT scorers — and the cutoff for those limited seats runs just as high (99.9+ percentile) as the CET route. Don’t mistake CMAT acceptance at these two names for an easier path in — it’s a narrower door, not a wider one.

The pattern worth noticing: the government-run Maharashtra institutes — JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA — offer by far the best fee-to-placement ratio of any CMAT-accepting college, since their fee structures are a fraction of comparable private institutes while placement outcomes stay competitive or better. That ROI gap is exactly why their limited CMAT seats attract such a disproportionately high cutoff.

If Maharashtra government colleges like JBIMS, SIMSREE, and PUMBA are your primary target, MAH-CET is the exam that matters most — it fills the bulk of their seats, with CMAT and CAT covering only a narrow All-India sliver. For everything outside Maharashtra’s state quota, CMAT’s national reach makes it the more versatile single exam to prepare for alongside CAT.
