CMAT Exam: Pattern, Eligibility, Cutoff, Fees & Top Accepting Colleges

No essay, no sectional time lock, no penalty for skipping a question — CMAT is built to be the most approachable major MBA entrance exam in India, and it’s accepted by more B-schools than any other. Here’s exactly how it works, which colleges are realistically in reach at your percentile, and how to prepare for the one section no other exam tests: Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

CMAT — the Common Management Admission Test — is the National Testing Agency’s national-level entrance exam for MBA and PGDM admission, and it’s built on a different philosophy from CAT or XAT: breadth over exclusivity. There’s no sectional time lock, no penalty for leaving a question unattempted, and no interview-only elite club at the other end — over 1,300 AICTE-approved B-schools accept the score, including more than 120 government-run institutes. It’s also the exam behind a detail most guides skip: a handful of All-India seats at marquee Maharashtra government colleges like JBIMS and SIMSREE — otherwise filled almost entirely through MAH-CET — are reserved for CMAT scorers. What follows is the current pattern, marking scheme, eligibility, selection process, and an honest percentile-to-college map.

What Makes CMAT Different

No Sectional Time Lock

Unlike CAT or IPMAT, CMAT gives you the full 180 minutes to allocate across all five sections however you like — there’s no forced 40-minute cap per section. If Quantitative Techniques is your strength and General Awareness is a quick tick-through, you can weight your time accordingly.

Zero Penalty for Skipping

Unattempted questions cost nothing at all — not even the small skip-penalty XAT applies. Combined with a moderate 4-mark-for-correct, 1-mark-off-for-wrong scheme, this makes CMAT a comparatively low-risk exam to attempt aggressively on questions you’re reasonably confident about.

A Dedicated Innovation & Entrepreneurship Section

This is CMAT’s genuinely unique section — no other major MBA entrance exam tests it. It covers business innovation concepts, startup thinking, and entrepreneurial scenarios, and it’s scored exactly like every other section, making it a real opportunity to pick up marks with focused, exam-specific prep rather than general aptitude practice.

Eligibility

You need a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Final-year students who will complete their degree requirements before the admission deadline can also apply. There’s no fixed minimum percentage at the CMAT registration stage itself — but individual accepting institutes commonly require a minimum aggregate (typically 50%, 45% for reserved categories) as part of their own eligibility check once you apply to them directly.

All five sections carry equal weightage — 20 questions and 80 marks each — and the full 180-minute window is shared across all of them with no individual sectional timer. The exam is conducted as a single-session, computer-based test in English, typically across 100+ cities in India.

Reading Comprehension carries the heaviest individual weight within Language Comprehension, while Data Interpretation and Arithmetic dominate the Quant section. General Awareness and Innovation & Entrepreneurship are widely considered CMAT’s most scoring sections for well-prepared candidates, since both reward focused static preparation over problem-solving speed.

CMAT Exam Application & Fees

CMAT registration typically opens in October and closes in the fourth week of November, with the exam held in the last week of January. The application fee has run around ₹2,500 for General category male candidates and ₹1,250 for General category female candidates, EWS/SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD candidates of either gender, and third-gender candidates. Payment is online only — net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI — and is non-refundable once submitted.

Selection Process

CMAT itself is only the screening stage. Once your score and percentile are out, you apply separately to each institute you’re targeting, and every institute runs its own shortlisting and final-selection process independently — there’s no centralised counselling the way JIPMAT or CAT-based IIM admissions work. Most institutes combine your CMAT percentile with academic record, and a GD/WAT/PI round, though the exact weightage varies significantly by college: some government institutes like the Maharashtra DTE colleges shortlist almost purely on percentile with minimal further rounds, while many private B-schools run a fuller composite process that includes group discussion, written ability, and personal interview.

Always verify the current admission policy directly with each target institute — weightage for CMAT score versus academics versus interview performance is set independently by every college and changes from cycle to cycle.

CMAT Cutoff & Accepting Colleges by Percentile

CMAT Percentile BandRealistic College Targets
99+JBIMS & SIMSREE Mumbai (limited All-India CMAT seats), PUMBA Pune
95-99K J Somaiya Mumbai, Goa Institute of Management, BIMTECH Greater Noida
90-95Welingkar (WeSchool) Mumbai, Great Lakes Chennai (composite process)
80-90IFIM Bangalore, Asian Pacific Institute of Management, XISS Ranchi, several well-placed regional PGDM colleges
70-80IBA Bangalore, VIT Business School, Jaipuria Institute of Management, JIMS Rohini, ISB&M Pune

Note the JBIMS and SIMSREE nuance: both are Maharashtra government institutes that fill the overwhelming majority of their seats through MAH-CET, but each reserves a small number of All-India seats specifically for CAT and CMAT scorers — and the cutoff for those limited seats runs just as high (99.9+ percentile) as the CET route. Don’t mistake CMAT acceptance at these two names for an easier path in — it’s a narrower door, not a wider one.

Top CMAT Colleges — Fees & Placements

CollegeTotal Fee (Approx.)Average Package
JBIMS Mumbai~₹8 lakh~₹26.4 LPA
SIMSREE Mumbai~₹1.4 lakh~₹15.2 LPA
PUMBA Pune~₹2.8-3 lakh~₹11.2 LPA
K J Somaiya Institute of Management~₹17-21 lakh~₹12-15 LPA (indicative)
Welingkar (WeSchool) Mumbai~₹14-17 lakh~₹11.7-13.6 LPA
Goa Institute of Management~₹16-19 lakh~₹14-16 LPA (indicative)

The pattern worth noticing: the government-run Maharashtra institutes — JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA — offer by far the best fee-to-placement ratio of any CMAT-accepting college, since their fee structures are a fraction of comparable private institutes while placement outcomes stay competitive or better. That ROI gap is exactly why their limited CMAT seats attract such a disproportionately high cutoff.

Fee and placement figures vary by batch and are updated by each institute independently. Confirm current numbers directly with each college’s admissions office before making a decision.

If Maharashtra government colleges like JBIMS, SIMSREE, and PUMBA are your primary target, MAH-CET is the exam that matters most — it fills the bulk of their seats, with CMAT and CAT covering only a narrow All-India sliver. For everything outside Maharashtra’s state quota, CMAT’s national reach makes it the more versatile single exam to prepare for alongside CAT.

How to Prepare for CMAT Exam

Use the lack of a sectional timer to play to your strengths

Since all 180 minutes are shared across sections, front-load time on whichever section you’re fastest and most accurate in, rather than splitting time evenly by default.

Attempt aggressively — the risk-reward math favours it

With zero penalty for skipping but only a modest −1 for a wrong answer against a +4 correct, an educated guess on a question you’re reasonably confident about is usually worth the risk.

Don’t skip General Awareness or Innovation & Entrepreneurship prep

Both sections reward focused static preparation more than problem-solving speed, making them genuinely high-return sections for candidates who put in consistent, targeted effort rather than leaving them to chance.

Shortlist colleges by realistic percentile band, not aspiration alone

With 1,300+ accepting institutes spanning a huge cutoff range, build a spread across a few percentile bands rather than fixating on the 99+ names — CMAT’s real strength is the number of solid options available below the very top.

If Maharashtra government colleges are the goal, prepare MAH-CET as the primary exam

JBIMS, SIMSREE, and PUMBA fill the overwhelming majority of seats through MAH-CET. Treat CMAT as a secondary, narrower shot at these three rather than your main route in.

Admission Timeline

CMAT registration typically opens in the second week of October and closes by the fourth week of November, with a short correction window following shortly after. The exam is held in the last week of January — CMAT 2027 is scheduled for January 24, 2027, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Results have generally followed within about three to four weeks of the exam. Once results are out, individual accepting institutes release their own cutoffs and open their separate application and GD/WAT/PI processes, typically running from February through the admission cycle’s close. Exact dates shift every year — confirm against the official NTA CMAT notification at cmat.nta.nic.in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CMAT?

CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) is a national-level MBA/PGDM entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency, accepted by more than 1,300 AICTE-approved B-schools across India, including over 120 government-run institutes.

What is the CMAT exam pattern?

100 MCQs across five equally-weighted sections — Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship — for 400 total marks, in 180 minutes with no sectional time limit.

Is there negative marking in CMAT?

Yes — each correct answer earns +4 marks and each wrong answer costs −1 mark. Unattempted questions carry no penalty at all.

Does CMAT get you into JBIMS or SIMSREE?

Only through a narrow route. Both institutes fill the overwhelming majority of seats through MAH-CET; each reserves a small number of All-India seats for CAT and CMAT scorers, and the cutoff for those seats runs just as high as the CET route — typically 99.9+ percentile.

What CMAT percentile do I need for a good college?

It depends entirely on which tier you’re targeting: 99+ for JBIMS/SIMSREE’s limited CMAT seats, 95-99 for names like K J Somaiya and GIM Goa, 90-95 for Welingkar and Great Lakes Chennai, and 70-90 for a wide range of solid regional and private PGDM colleges.

How is CMAT different from CAT?

CMAT has no sectional time lock, no penalty for skipped questions, and a unique Innovation & Entrepreneurship section. Its acceptance is also far broader — 1,300+ colleges versus CAT’s roughly 1,000+, with CAT carrying the IIM-specific weight CMAT doesn’t.

Is the selection process the same at every CMAT college?

No. Each accepting institute runs its own independent shortlisting and final-selection process — some rely almost purely on percentile, others weigh academics and a GD/WAT/PI round heavily. Always confirm the current policy with your specific target institute.
