OMETs and CMAT Coaching

OMETs — Other Management Entrance Tests — are MBA entrance exams other than CAT. They include CMAT, XAT, SNAP, NMAT, MICAT, MAT and CUET PG. While CAT is the most competitive and opens doors to IIMs, OMETs provide access to excellent MBA programmes at XLRI, NMIMS, Symbiosis, MICA and hundreds of AICTE-approved colleges. Most serious MBA aspirants target CAT alongside 3 to 4 OMETs to maximise their options.

CMAT — the Common Management Admission Test — is conducted by NTA and is accepted by over 1,000 AICTE-approved MBA colleges across India, including JBIMS Mumbai, KJ Somaiya, PUMBA, Welingkar and many more. It covers Quantitative Techniques, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness and a unique Innovation and Entrepreneurship section. It is typically held in January or February each year.

Ideally alongside. The preparation for CMAT and other OMETs overlaps significantly with CAT — so preparing for both simultaneously requires minimal extra effort. A student who targets CAT, CMAT and 2 to 3 other OMETs has 5 to 6 genuine shots at a strong MBA programme. The core preparation builds the skills that are common across all OMETs, and exam-specific training is layered on top. XAT is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur and is the most difficult OMET — closest to CAT in terms of difficulty. Its unique section is Decision Making, which tests ethical and business judgement in complex scenarios. XAT also has a General Knowledge section that is separately timed. Stalwart specifically trains students for the Decision Making section, which is not found in any other MBA entrance exam.

CMAT is generally considered less difficult than CAT, with a broader acceptance base and less competition for top scores. However, top colleges like JBIMS Mumbai are highly competitive even through CMAT. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship section in CMAT is unique and requires specific preparation. A strong CAT preparation translates directly to CMAT success — the skills tested are largely the same.

Yes. XLRI accepts XAT scores — not CAT. A student who scores well in XAT can get into XLRI Jamshedpur regardless of their CAT score. XAT has its own preparation requirements, particularly for the Decision Making section, but the core Verbal and Quantitative preparation is the same. Your Stalwart mentor will advise whether XLRI through XAT is a realistic target based on your preparation level.

Yes. CMAT, XAT, SNAP and NMAT all have Group Discussion, Personal Interview or Written Ability Test rounds as part of their selection process. At Stalwart, GD, PI and WAT preparation is integrated into every OMET course from day one — not added as a last-minute module. Getting into a college matters as much as getting shortlisted.

NMAT is conducted by GMAC for NMIMS and other partner institutions. It uniquely allows up to 3 attempts in a single year, with the best score counted. This makes NMAT particularly strategic — your first attempt serves as a benchmark, and your second and third attempts are informed by that data.
